My first child was happy as a clam sleeping in the crib until she was 2 ½ years old. The only reason we moved her to a normal bed was because her baby brother arrived. We did not even think about baby pillows and blankets. She wore a sleep sack and was snug and happy. She could not swing her legs over the rail, while wearing the sleep sack. I don’t know that she would have anyway, as she was so happy in there. It was an easy transition when we moved her to a big bed. She took a couple naps there, then we moved her to the bed for nighttime, as well. It was a full size bed in a beautiful wooden frame. We ordered a cute girly comforter and grabbed a couple adult sized pillows. We did not bother with one of those little baby pillows. We went straight to normal pillows.

My son was an entirely different story. Early on, he learned to unzip his sleep sack. He could easily swing his leg up on the crib rail. For months and months, that is as far as he would go. Until one night, when he climbed out of the crib entirely and walked to greet me at the door. We immediately took the crib mattress out of the crib and set it up on the floor.

Moving him to a bed presented all these obstacles that we did not have to deal with when we moved our daughter to a bed. It was a rough transition, because he was so young. He was a couple months shy of his second birthday. We had to remove most of the things from his room for a couple weeks, so he could not get into trouble. Another parent recommended putting a gate on the bedroom door, which turned out to be incredibly helpful. He was so stubborn that for the first couple days, he would fall asleep sitting in the middle of the wood floor of his room. After a very LONG week, he was back in his routine.

When we finally got him comfortable in his new bed routine, the advice from well meaning people starting coming in. “Oh, he is not old enough to be sleeping in a big bed.” “It is dangerous.” “Do not use pillows and bedding.” Wait. What? He is old enough to crawl out of a crib, but not old enough to use a pillow? Can he use a tiny airline baby pillow? So I hopped online to check out the age recommendations. Children under 2 years of age should NOT use a pillow or big blanket. Once a child is 2 or they move to a big bed, you can introduce them then.

Since my son was not yet 2, I decided to follow the advice and start with one of those baby pillows. It was so small, like an airline pillow, and I hardly saw the point. It did not look like our pillows, so I think my son thought it was something else. I think the need to put a pillow and bedding on his bed was due to my own notion of what a bed is supposed to look like. We waited about a month, until my son was totally comfortable in his bed. Then we put pillows and a comfy blanket on his bed. He loved sitting up with the pillows and snuggling like he did in our bed. And he actually used the pillows for his head, so he was happy to have a normal pillow instead of that baby pillow.

Consulting a pediatrician before buying a baby pillow will help the customer make a wise and healthy purchase. Experts recommend that a good baby pillow should be made of soft washable foam that is firm and gives adequate support for the baby’s head. Today a baby pillow is made to support the baby firmly on its back and prevents the tendency of the head of the baby to roll as the baby sleeps.

A good baby pillow should be relatively firm so that a baby cannot sink into it and get smothered. It is safe to teach a baby to sleep on a baby pillow after it becomes two years old . Before the age of two babies can get suffocated on a pillow. It may be dangerous to use a baby pillow before the age of two because the baby may be suffocated by the pillow. Please see this site. The first baby pillow used by the baby should be small to fit his or her head easy to wash and should not contain any material that may give the baby an allergy. workingmotherann.com

Seeking the advice of a doctor on the type of baby pillow that the baby should lay its little head on for the first time will help the parent make an informed choice for the comfort of the baby. Using an adult size pillow for the baby may give allergies, acid reflex or ear infections to the baby. Suggested baby pillows have polyester fill or down fill. The American academy of Pediatricians has made recommendations regarding sleeping positions that are ideal for the baby and manufacturers make baby pillows based on these suggestions. A good baby pillow is one that is manufactured to the standards recommended by the American Academy of Pediatricians.

I have been a hearing and reading a lot on the net on how dangerous baby pillows are and some horrendous tales of babies smothering to death because of using baby pillows. Hogwash! I would say. My personal experience in using baby pillows for my daughter from the age of one and half is a good example that it is not such a devilish product as it is made out to be. Yes there are some precautions which you have to take. Do not buy cheap merchandise, the so called ‘best bargains’, they are likely to be of poor quality and hence unsafe. A little bit of market survey through the WalMart, Woolworth and Baby care shops is necessary to get a sense of what best is available. A little bit of research on the Internet also helps. You can use a narrow but firm pillow or a memory foam pillow for the purpose. I, of course chose to buy a memory foam pillow which is a trifle expensive. The memory foam pillow does really mold to the shape of the baby’s head. I say this out of experience of seeing my baby sleep soundly without once bringing out the late night feed ever since she started sleeping on a memory foam pillow.

The benefits of a baby pillow don’t end there. According to some doctors, having a pillow, raises the baby’s head slightly above the rest of the body and makes breathing easier especially when the baby is suffering from a cold. They also opine that pillow support prevents cranial deformities which can occur if the baby sleeps with head to one side for a long duration. Make sure you check the pillow cover. Just make sure you buy the softest, linen cotton material for a pillow cover. Such a material helps prevent allergic reactions or rashes, a common occurrence if using synthetic pillow covers. Don’t buy soft or feather pillows, they are the ones responsible for the negative publicity. So go ahead and use baby pillows and see your angel sleep soundly.

A personalized baby pillow is not given for the baby to rest its head because a baby should use a pillow only after it is two years old. When you give a personalized baby pillow as a gift it is meant to be a memento to be treasured by the parents and the baby as it grows up. Most personalized baby pillows have the name date and age of the baby embroidered on them.

Picking the right baby pillow for your child is important. Your child may sleep much more comfortably with a pillow. But just as babies are not like adults, baby pillows are not like adult pillows. How do you know when you have chosen the right pillow for your baby?

First, is your child old enough to use a baby pillow? Pillows should never be put in the crib with babies under the age of two. Because infants’ neck muscles are weak, they run the risk of suffocating on the pillow if they roll onto their belly. Even when a baby has an ear infection or a congested nose and sleeps better with a pillow under his or her head, giving the child a pillow is risky. If your child is under two but needs her head elevated, consider putting a pillow under the mattress instead, so that the mattress itself is elevated. The firm surface of the mattress will reduce the risk of suffocation and keep your child safe.

Second, does your baby require a baby pillow? Because toddlers and babies are proportioned differently from adults, they often sleep perfectly well without a pillow. You will know your child is ready for a pillow when they sleep restlessly or when they start balling blankets or stuffed toys under their head.

Third, what size should a baby pillow be? Small, flat pillows, like the pillows you get on an airplane, are the best ones to choose for your baby. Using a smaller pillow will prevent your child from elevating his or her head too high and waking up with a crick in the neck.

Fourth, what is the best filling for a baby pillow? Even though down and feather pillows are delightfully soft and comfortable, don’t give them to your child. Small children find them to be too soft, and exposing babies to down or feathers too young can cause them to become allergic. The stuffing should be firm, and hypoallergenic fillings are best.

These guidelines will ensure that you choose just the right baby pillow for your toddler. Remember to make sure your child is old enough and needs a baby pillow, then choose a pillow that is smaller than an adult pillow and filled with a firm, hypoallergenic stuffing. After that, do the most important step of all, and ask your baby what he or she thinks of the new pillow. Your child is the best judge of whether you have picked the right pillow. With these guidelines, you are sure to find a pillow they love.

Not only is a baby sleep pillow important for your child’s comfort, it is also an important decoration in your child’s room. If you want your child’s bed to be a comfortable and soothing place to sleep, your child needs the right pillow. You can choose from hundreds of available designs, including some truly adorable ones. What does your child love most? Fire trucks? Cats? A favorite cartoon character? You can find a pillow decorated to suit him or her.

You can also create your own customized baby pillow by buying a blank baby sized pillowcase and embroidering, appliqueing, or adding decals. It’s best to decorate only one side of the pillowcase. Decorations like decals and applique are rough and uncomfortable to sleep on.

You can also make a pillowcase for your child’s baby sleep pillow from scratch. Measure the pillow along the outer seams. Each side of the pillowcase will be those dimensions, plus a half inch on all sides for the seams and two to four inches along the longest side to create a finished edge for the open end of the pillowcase. For example, if the pillow is 12″ by 16″, you will need two pieces of fabric that are each about 13″ by 19″. Before you cut the fabric, wash it to preshrink it and to remove the sizing (a kind of starch that bolt fabric is treated with). Lay the pieces together so their “outside” sides face inside, and sew around three of the edges, leaving a half inch seam. Roll the open edge up like a pants cuff , then sew around the innermost seam, making sure the raw edge of the fabric is rolled under. Turn the new pillowcase right side out, and you are done! You can decorate the baby pillowcase further, or you can choose a pretty fabric and leave it as is. The best fabrics are flannel, jersey knits, and soft cotton, but you can also use velvet, plush, or silk if you plan to use the pillow only for decoration.

Remember not to give pillows to children under the age of two. Doctors advise that infants should not sleep with pillows because they can suffocate. You may also find that older children do not need pillows, either, since their proportions are different from adults’. When in doubt, let your child try sleeping with a pillow, and if they do not like it, take it away and save it for later.

Making or finding the perfect baby sleep pillow for your child should be quick and easy with this advice. Ask your child to pick out a pillow or help you create one, or surprise them. Good luck!

At present times with so many variations of the baby pillow one is forced to think of their role in a baby’s life. There are numerous baby pillows which are used as everyday baby pillows on a daily basis, but there are some which can be safely termed as their best friends, given to how easy and comfortable they can actually make life for the baby. What are the benefits and comforts that make your friend a good friend? Read on and find out some such comforts and benefits that make the baby pillow a prized possession in your baby’s life and possibly their first friend, whom they become relatively attached to.

One of the very first benefits that become evident in the very early stages in your baby’s life are that the baby pillows help in the formation of the shape of the baby’s head and make sure that the head of the baby does not become either deformed or too flat. Several such pillows that are used for this specific purpose are commonly available in the market and stores near youActually they aid to tuck the baby in the crib safely, ensuring that the baby does not fall in case of any movement made by them.

Other than that they provide relief to the baby, say when he is suffering from a cold and consequently a clogged nose and is having difficulty in breathing, in that case the baby pillows are used to elevate the head in order to ensure easier breathing. They are also commonly used for other purposes such as provision of support while the baby crawls on the floor and also for propping the babies head when they are being nursed. Several also ensure that the toddler has not only a safe but also a comfortable journey when traveling on road by car. If the baby pillow is available in brilliant colors, that is all the more better as then it will surely catch the toddlers eye.

Having taken a look at all these advantages it is not so strange that the babies may develop considerable attachment to their baby pillows. Its importance can be judged by the fact that it is given as a personalized gift to children by their parents when they grow up. Many times the baby pillows are passed from generation to generation as a momento.

There are a multitude of different baby pillows on the market today. They all have some unique function, and I actually think some of them are legitimate! There are baby pillows that position the head and body of the baby while they are sleeping, there are baby pillows that are specifically designed for nursing, and there are even baby pillows designed to position a baby while they are riding in the car, just to name a few.

I really like the pillows for the bassinette which are positioned on both side of the baby while they sleep. They positioning the baby so that they are flat on their back, which is the recommended sleep position. These are great baby pillows, but there is a new version that I think is even better. The new version of this pillow has memory foam which will mold to the shape of baby’s head, making it mold to the pillow This will prevent a flat spot from forming on the back of baby’s head. This baby pillow will also prevent baby from rolling around, helping to promote a peaceful night’s sleep because baby is in the same spot all night.

An additional type of baby pillow that is on the market today is known as a nursing pillow. These pillows are crescent shaping and come in handy for all sorts of things…not just nursing. I have found that they are great for supporting baby to view books, bottle feed, or be held, in addition to being great for nursing. I have found that these pillows have a multitude of uses and should be on every mom’s wish list, whether they are nursing or not.

Car pillows are great to support baby’s head while riding in a car seat. They are great to lean on when baby gets tuckered out. I like the fact that they keep baby’s head away from the plastic on the car seat. Most car seats come with a pillow, but I prefer to purchase a separate one. It always seems like the ones that are included are just not quite as good as one that you have picked out yourself.

Baby pillows are great for so many uses. They can be used for many tasks, from support when feeding to riding in the car. Some of them are a bit pricy, but they are worth every penny, especially if you buy them for your first baby and use them several times thereafter.

There is a lot of excitement, and often confusion, when a new baby is on the way. This is even more so the case for brand new parents. It may cross your mind that you will have to make some purchases in order to make the new baby comfortable. Aside from the obvious necessities such as a bottle or diapers, there are less known things that can ease your way into parenthood. The baby pillow is one such helper.

As there are a myriad of different baby pillows to choose from and the choices can be overwhelming, but some are better than others. One thing that can be useful to have for mother and child from day one is the nursing pillow. The nursing baby pillow will keep the head of your child supported while nursing, so that mommy can relax. These sort of baby pillows can also be beneficial to help the child relax. Many times these pillows assist the baby to fall asleep, since it helps make different positions comfortable. Even when nursing is not involved, the design of these baby pillows makes it easier for other family members to hold the infant as they support the head so well.

A more conventional pillow is also available. Most doctors agree that a regular pillow is best for ages two and older. However, if your child has a cold or upper respiratory infection, he or she might benefit the tilt a pillow would give to help them breathe. It is always best to consult your doctor about using a baby pillow before age two. Offsetting ear infections and acid reflux are two other benefits of using a baby pillow. If your child suffers from any of these ailments, a pillow might ease his or her symptoms.

There are a few things to look for in all baby pillows. One guideline to follow is that the pillow should be both small and lightweight. This is best so that the child does not get too hot, or suffocate from the bulk of a normal sized pillow. It is also best to buy a pillow that does not have decorations like fringe or beads. This way, the baby cannot choke on anything attached to the pillow. Cotton and silk pillows are two perfect examples of baby friendly fabrics. It is best to stay away from things like feather pillows, as they could cause an unexpected allergic reaction. The best possible options are those baby pillows that have a removable cover, or are machine washable. If you follow these simple guidelines, the possibilities for your baby pillow are endless!
